Abandze Beach Resort, Ghana

Located on the coastal road about 20 minutes before Cape Coast if coming from Accra, you will know you are there when you pass the village of Kormantse and see the beautiful lagoon to your left and a castle on the hill above. Right after the lagoon is the turn in to Abanze Beach. After a short driveway you will pull into the lot for Abanze with its beautiful flower bed planting right in front of the reception building, restaurant and bar.

Abanze Beach Resort is located right on the beach between the villages of Kormantse and Abanze with the fort on the hill over it. The beach here is very clean, with a nice break that we have been told is enjoyed by surfers who occasionally make it here to enjoy it. About 75 meters back from the water there is a line of about 5 beautiful white huts that either share two rooms with their own bathrooms or have one dedicated room.

Abanze being a little more upscale then a number of options in Ghana, also reflected in their price, they do have very clean bathrooms, and offer hot water.

There is plenty to do and see in the area. Right to one side of Abanze is a beautiful lagoon that is being protected by the resort and the surrounding villages. There is word that a small group of monkeys are making a come back in the lagoon. You can also take a walk down the beach to Kormantse or Abanze to meet the fisherman on the beach and the children and people in the villages. The people of Abanze have expressed wanting to be more involved in tourism rather than just the Fort located on the hill above them. The right visitor might be able arrange a dancing and drumming demonstration.

If you would like to visit the castle first ask in the village for the care taker who has the key and will walk with you up the steps, unlock the door and give you an informal tour. The area was an important trading center long before the British colonized the area. The Fort dates back to these times originating in 1961, it is now called Fort Amsterdam or fort Cormantin (from the near by village of Kormantse). Some notable African Americans have traced their ancestors back to here including Louis Armstrong.

A little further down the road is the village of Anomabu which has a number of great pusuban shrins, another Fort and some interesting architecture to explore. Abanze is also very close to Cape Coast making it a great place to stay, keeping out of the busy city but close enough to make day trips to all the great tourist attractions in the area including, Cape Coast, Elmina, Kakum National park, most of the central coast of Ghana, Mosomagor Eco-village, and Domana Rock Shrine.

In terms of economics, Abanze is very expensive especially in comparison to Anomabu which is just as nice or nicer and much less of a price just down the road.

Even though we do not market any trips with Abandze Beach Resort as an option you can always request it on another trip.  We can also tailor make a trip for that includes Abanze.
