Music Video Monday #4: Osibisa, “Fire”

Highlife is impossible to get away from in Ghana but I don’t know why you would want to get anyway from it.  We are back to Highlife again today, or the Original Highlife, Osibisa which is also the name of the group in the below video which they derived their name from an early form of Highlife.  This live performance was filmed in London in 1983, it is just so fun to listen to, they became very popular in the 70′s.  The name of this track is Fire.  The style of Osibisa (the group) is better described as Afro-Pop then Highlife or Osibisa music though with a fusion of African Artists and Caribbean Artists.

This second video helps to explain the sound and the origins of Highlife.  The first presenter on this mini-documentary was a professor of mine at the University of Ghana in 2004 when I studied Ghanaian Popular Music.  His name is Professor Collins and he is full of knowledge about West African Music.  He is actually a part of the history living and breathing it since the 1960s.
