Green Bug Adventures is committed to finding the highest quality (though not most expensive) destinations and accommodations for our customers. As part of this mission, we have developed a system for rating how well lodging providers live up to our Ecotourism standards. Establishment owners who want to work with Green Bug Adventures have been asked to complete an evaluation of their establishment’s operations. Currently five Ghanaian lodges have completed the self-evaluation. These ratings along with descriptions of the lodges and their services can be found on the Green Bug Adventures website.
No evaluation system is perfect and this is especially true for eco-tourism where standards for responsible business are still being refined. We want to be a part of this evolution of standards and to invite our customers to participate in this process with us. Meanwhile, this evaluation process will be helpful in raising the awareness of providers and in showing our customers the strengths and weaknesses of each establishment. The choices that you, as a tourist, make will make a difference. Your choices can be influential in supporting a tourism industry in Africa which supports community and economic justice or they can support the status quo and the pattern of exploitative values that impoverish and disempowered communities.
In designing customized tours, Green Bug Adventures gives our customers as many choices as possible. This evaluation system is intended to provide you with the information to make an informed choice based on your needs and values. This evaluation system shows you how each establishment works to be environmentally friendly, socially responsible and how they contribute towards conservation. In some areas we are not able to offer a choice of where to stay because there is only one option in that area; but even in these cases you can be informed about the place where you will be staying. Maybe you will even identify some areas of improvement that you can discuss with the owner of the establishment.
Your opinion is important to us so please give us your feedback on these establishments. All of this information will be posted for future customers. Green Bug Adventures does not view our establishments just as vendors. We have identified establishments that share our values of eco-tourism and that are committed to quality improvement. So, customer feedback will be used to help our partners offer better products or services. In establishing standards and being transparent with the ratings, we also hope to raise the bar for all establishments with the ultimate goal of providing more appealing accommodations for our customers and a greater investment in the local communities. By February of 2011 we will have personally inspected each of these establishments and will post our ratings for each of them. These ratings will evaluate cleanliness, safety, and service.

1 out of 5 Green Bugs: You will not find any establishments on this website with a Green Bug rating of less than three out of five Green Bugs. An overall score of three is the minimum for an establishment to be a Green Bug provider. We do work with accommodation providers to help them achieve an acceptable score so they can be listed and be utilized by Green Bug Adventures. But a score of one Green Bug means that the business has done nothing to reduce their effects on the environment and actually engages in some destructive practices. They do not have programs to help to make their community a better place, they don’t pay a competitive or living wage and they do not support conservation. These establishments appear to be primarily concerned about profits or they are just negligent in their regard toward community or socially conscience business.
2 out of 5 Green Bugs: Again, you will not see an accommodation provider on this site with a Green Bug rating of two. Such providers are closer to meeting our standards but still do not score well enough for us to recommend them.
3 out of 5 Green bugs: Three out of five Green Bugs means that the establishment is over halfway to meeting the Green Bug Adventures Eco-tourism standards. These companies do a number of things that make their business operations more sustainable and beneficial to the community. There is still room for improvement though. We work with companies that achieve a minimum of three Green Bugs and we also encourage and help them where we can to improve their operations.
4 out of 5 Green Bugs: This is the rating that the majority of our preferred lodging providers achieve. It indicates a good environmental policy, a commitment to work to make their community a better place and a practice of educating their guests about the environment and the local cultures and practices.
5 out of 5 Green Bugs: The “power house” Eco-lodges that have this rating are an awesome force of community enterprise, being locally and community owned, and they meet all of the Green Bug Adventures standards including recycling, composting, preparation of local dishes, being built of recycled and locally sourced materials, conserving water, educating guests and their community about environmental issues and conservation, plus much more. It is our hope that one day all of our accommodations will be operating at the level of five Green Bugs.
