Gambia

The Gambia is a country that was a former English colony, it is surrounded on all sides by Senegal.  The Gambia river runs right down the middle of the country.  Its boundaries are said to be formed when an English ship sailed up the river firing its cannons on each side the distance that the cannon ball traveled is essentially where the border ended.  It is hard to say this is true since the area of the Gambia came to being in 1889 with an agreement between the French and English, with the English getting the present day area of the Gambia and the French getting what is now Senegal.

This small countries primary economy is mainly dependent on Agriculture, Fishing and tourism.  Once again similar to most West African countries the slave trade has dominated this area and one of the reasons why its area was colonized and fiercely protected by different European powers.  It is estimated that over 3 million slaves were taken from the land in the area of the Gambia.

Gambia received its independence in 1965 forming a constitutional monarchy with the commonwealth of nations.  The monarchy was soon replaced by a president though and it is still a presidential democracy to this day with intermittent hiccups and dictators.
